With digital photography, image quality depends largely on three core components: the optics, the image sensor and the image processing engine. With striking lenses, high-quality sensors and powerful processing engines, Olympus went even a step further: With integrated IS systems, you can even trick physics.

Built-in Image Stabiliser

Image blur has ruined uncountable numbers of shots, and millions of times photographers have been angry about opportunities they thought they’d taken but in the end have lost. One of the causes of image blur is camera shake. The hand that holds the camera always shakes a little, althought he photographer hardly ever otices this, and under normal conditions it rarely becomes apparent in the pictures taken. Especially when stooting with high focal lengths or slow shutter speeds, even slight movements of the camera result in blurred images.
So that you don’t need to carry a heavy tripod or invest extra money into every single stabilised lens, Olympus integrated a built-in image stabiliser into the camera body of the E-3 and E-510. It stabilises up to 5 EV steps (up to 4 EV steps with the E-510), making it the most effective solution on the market. Click here to read more

Image processing

The image processing engine comprises a combination of hardware (processors) and software (algorithms). Among its tasks, it gathers information about the luminance and chrominance from the individual pixels and uses it to compute the correct colour and brightness values for each pixel. This results in images with natural and pleasing colours, balanced contrast and sharpness. With Olympus E-System cameras, you receive natural skin colours and a realistic blue colour of the sky. Also you don’t want your images to show noise, a negative side effect also in digital photography. A good image processor separates the noise from the image information and removes it.

With the TruePic III engine, Olympus created a masterpiece to ensure image depth, clarity and fine details. Colours come out warm and natural with Advanced Proper Gamma III technology, the Advanced Noise Filter III contributes to the faithful reproduction of images through the reduction of noise by isolating the image and noise signals accurately.
And the Advanced Detail Reproduction technology cares for smooth and sharp edges by accurately detecting directions. Applying a Low Pass Filter in the edge direction and a High Pass Filter in the edges normal line direction, edges become smooh and false colours can be completely eliminated.
You won’t find any fuzzy lines on your images any more!

Qualified lenses

ZUIKO DIGITAL lens system for fantastic capturing, high resolution. The near telecentric construction of lenses optimised for the Four Thirds Standard ensures

light hits the sensor at almost perpendicular angles. This guarantees edge to edge colour, clarity, and higher brightness.

Only if each pixel is provided with precise and individual information by the lens, the maximum resolution with detail reproduction down to the pixel level is possible. Most 35mm – lenses are not able to discriminate fine details to the diameter of a sensor’s pixel especially in the corners and therefore they can not provide the sensor with the required precise information. A digital optimized lens has a significantly enhanced resolution below the pixel’s diameter. Finest details do not “swap over” from one pixel to its neighbours.

In addition a communication between lenses and camera body provides for greater image control.
